Live Music at Destination Weddings: What’s In (and What’s Out) with FixTheMusic

When couples start planning a destination wedding in Spain, music is often one of the things they are most excited about. It helps shape the atmosphere of the whole celebration, from the emotion of the ceremony to the energy of the dance floor later in the evening.

Over the past few years, couples have become more thoughtful about how music fits into the flow of the day. Rather than choosing one style and sticking with it, many now plan the music in stages so the atmosphere evolves naturally as the celebration unfolds.

When it comes to finding musicians abroad, couples often begin by asking their planner for recommendations or researching trusted services that specialise in live wedding music. Many also discover artists through platforms such as FixTheMusic, which connects couples with professional musicians performing at weddings across Spain and throughout Europe.

Recently I had a conversation with the team at Fix the Music and we were chatting about things couples are loving right now when it comes to live music at weddings, along with a couple of trends that are fading away.

Music throughout the day

One of the biggest changes in recent years is that couples are no longer saving music just for the evening party.
Instead, live musicians often appear at several moments throughout the celebration. A guitarist during the ceremony, relaxed acoustic music during drinks, then a lively band or DJ once the dancing begins.
This works beautifully at destination weddings where the day tends to unfold slowly and guests spend more time together. Music becomes a natural thread that ties the different parts of the celebration together.

Leaning into the local setting

Spain offers such a wonderful backdrop for weddings and many couples like to choose music that complements the surroundings.
Spanish guitar during a ceremony or drinks reception is always a favourite. Acoustic bands also work beautifully in outdoor venues, particularly during sunset drinks or garden receptions.
Couples who are exploring ideas often start by looking through collections of live wedding bands to get a feel for the different styles available and what might suit their venue and guests best.

Smaller bands, bigger atmosphere

Another trend many couples are embracing is choosing smaller ensembles rather than large stage-style bands.

A trio or quartet can create a lovely atmosphere without overwhelming the space, particularly in historic venues, villas or outdoor terraces.

Smaller bands also tend to be more flexible. The same musicians might play relaxed acoustic sets during drinks, then add drums or extra instruments for the evening party. It keeps the energy building naturally throughout the day.

If you are exploring different styles, it can be helpful to look at examples of wedding bands performing across Spain to see what other couples have chosen for their celebrations.

Moving away from one style all day

Another shift many couples are making is moving away from having just one style of music throughout the entire celebration.

In the past, it was quite common to book one band or one DJ to cover everything from the drinks reception through to the late-night party. While that can still work perfectly well, many couples now prefer to create different atmospheres as the day unfolds.

For example, softer live music during the ceremony and drinks reception, followed by something more energetic once the dancing begins.

Breaking the day into these different musical moments helps the celebration feel more dynamic and keeps guests engaged from start to finish.

Mixing live music with a DJ

Music style and variation is becoming more important for the parties too.

While DJs remain popular, many couples now combine them with live musicians. A saxophonist performing alongside a DJ or a band followed by a DJ set later in the evening can create a really fun atmosphere.

This mix often keeps the dance floor full for longer and gives the party a slightly more unique feel.

Keeping the experience relaxed

At destination weddings, the overall atmosphere is often relaxed and social. Guests have travelled to be there and everyone is keen to enjoy the surroundings, the food and the company.

Live music fits beautifully into this kind of setting. Whether it is gentle background music during a drinks reception or a lively band encouraging everyone onto the dance floor, it adds personality and warmth to the celebration.

The most important thing is choosing music that reflects you as a couple and the feeling you want to create for your guests.

After all, some of the most memorable moments at a wedding happen when the right music meets the right moment.
